STRATEGIC CURRICULUM DESIGN AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION FOLLOWING THE COI FRAMEWORK APPROACH
Starting from the recommendations provided in the above sections, in the following we provide a synoptic table that can be used by designers to take the necessary strategic decisions to structure courses aligned with the CoI framework, especially in terms of:
- localizing LOs and modules (evaluating micro-credential approach or the implementation of two profiles – See “ECTS and Profiles” Guide)
- defining ECTS,
- integrating WBL,
- defining delivery mode and infrastructure requirements,
- allocating resources (technology, people, and infrastructure),
- defining high-level assessment strategies.
Following these recommendations should guarantee the resulting Localized Curriculum not only will meet institutional and regional needs but also support the development of effective learning communities.
By addressing these high-level elements, designers will lay the basis to create a flexible and adaptable curriculum, while empowering teachers to take micro-level pedagogical decisions that align with the CoI principles.
1. Localizing Learning Outcomes (LOs) and modules
Objective: Guide curriculum designers in tailoring the EU Curriculum LOs to institutional contexts.
Key considerations:
- Balance knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a way that promotes both individual learning and community-based knowledge construction.
- Weight the possibility to adopt an approach based on micro-credentials.
- Choose to implement the 6 modules of TEAMCARE Curriculum or, if not possible, weight the chance to create new different modules assembling LOs in a new way.
- Weight the possibility to implement an approach based on two different profiles (team leader and team member1).
2. Defining ECTS
Objective: Structure the curriculum into modules that support the integration of social, cognitive, and teaching presences, while allocating ECTS credits appropriately.
Key considerations:
- Choose to implement the COMPREHENSIVE or the ESSENTIALS version of the Curriculum (see Curriculum Flexibility and ECTS Guide) and ensure ECTS allocation reflects not only the individual workload but also the time required for group work, discussions, and peer feedback, all essential for fostering social presence.
- Consider modular flexibility that allows for adaptation in line with the evolving needs of the learning community.
3. Work-Based Learning Integration
Objective: Integrate WBL opportunities in a way that supports the cognitive and social presences by creating authentic learning environments and practical collaboration.
Key considerations:
- Design WBL activities that encourage students to co-construct knowledge through real-world problem-solving, in alignment with the CoI framework’s cognitive presence.
- Ensure that WBL tasks involve group work and reflective activities, reinforcing social presence and the collaborative learning process.
- Design assessments for WBL that evaluate both individual contributions and group interactions, promoting community-based learning.
4. Defining delivery mode and infrastructure requirements
Objective: Select the most effective course delivery mode (face-to-face, online, or blended) that fosters social, cognitive, and teaching presences, supported by adequate infrastructure.
Key considerations:
- In online or blended formats, ensure the infrastructure supports both synchronous and asynchronous communication to foster social presence through meaningful interaction.
- Choose delivery modes that encourage student autonomy while still providing structured guidance, supporting the gradual development of teaching presence.
- Guarantee that the technology platforms enable collaboration, reflection, and the co-construction of knowledge, aligning with the cognitive presence in the CoI framework.
5. Resource allocation (technology, people, and infrastructure)
Objective: Ensure that the appropriate resources are allocated to support the development of an effective learning community.
Key considerations:
- Allocate resources that promote the development of social presence, such as tools for collaboration (forums, breakout rooms, shared workspaces) and teacher facilitation.
- Invest in platforms and tools that support cognitive presence through interactive content, peer feedback mechanisms, and spaces for critical discussions.
- Ensure that teachers receive adequate training to foster both teaching and social presences, enabling them to guide and support the learning community effectively.
6. High-level assessment strategy
Objective: Design a broad assessment framework focusing on evaluating not only individual learning but also community-based achievements.
Key considerations:
- Assessments should evaluate the development of cognitive presence by measuring critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to integrate peer feedback.
- Incorporate assessments that measure social presence, such as participation in group discussions, peer review, and collaboration on shared tasks.
- Assess teaching presence by evaluating the extent to which students take responsibility for their own learning and contribute to guiding the learning community.
