A balanced use of communication modes plays a decisive role in fostering Social Presence. Synchronous tools such as webinars or breakout rooms create immediacy, allowing learners to interact in real time, ask questions, and clarify misunderstandings quickly. These live moments help replicate the sense of direct interaction typical of facetoface courses and contribute to building stronger social ties.

However, not all learners can participate equally in synchronous sessions due to time zones, work commitments, or personal constraints. This is why asynchronous tools such as discussion forums are important. They give students the flexibility to contribute at their own pace, reflect before responding, and revisit discussions later.

Integrating both modalities creates a more inclusive learning environment. For example, a course could launch a weekly live session to introduce themes and then continue the discussion asynchronously, allowing all participants to contribute. Providing learners with a clear communication plan that outlines the purpose of each tool helps set expectations and encourages balanced participation.
